D. Brent Walton

About the Instructor

Brent has taken a disability retirement, but here’s his biography…

Brent began photography at age 11.  He started photographing his Matchbox cars with his mom’s Kodak Brownie.  Shortly thereafter, he used the family bathroom as a darkroom.  His father supervised the local high school photography club advisor at the time; he let Brent hangout in the high school darkroom after school.

Coming from a family of educators, Brent taught at Golden Gate University (San Francisco & Walnut Creek, California) and at Heald College (Concord, California).  Aside from teaching as a profession, Brent spent many years on instructional staffs for the Boy Scouts of America teaching courses on backpacking, cycling, photography, cooking and leadership skills.  He also served as a Train-the-Trainer instructor teaching others how to effectively teach.

Brent recently completed his a book, 24 Things Business Owners Do to Undermine Their Own Business (available on Amazon.com).  It is a self-help book for business owners to help them avoid pitfalls.  It is a MUST READ for anyone thinking of going in to business for themselves, especially photographers.

Winner of the Reader’s Digest/Explorer Scout Speech Contest, Brent enjoys public speaking.  He often memorizes stories or quotes.  He says, “Memorization allows you to present a story with emotion and gives you confidence.”

In 2007, Brent cleaned house at the Contra Costa County Fair with an unprecedented 1st place in every professional photography category.  In addition, he took Best of Show and Best Presentation at the same fair.

His New York location was recently purchased and, as of this update, he is in the process of getting things set up in New York.   The Beckwith Estate is a beautiful setting.  A mansion built in the 1830s, it boasts of a beautiful setting in Upstate New York’s Village of Palmyra.

Brent is a Certified Professional Photographer, Photographic Craftsman (Cr. Photog.) and a member of the Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographer Society of New York State, and the Finger Lakes Professional Photographers.  He is president of Finger Lakes Professional Photographers.
